Growing up in Palo Alto, California, and as a kid I witnessed my parents having wine centric parties. It was the 1960s and from what I can remember the rage was New York wines. Napa was just coming onto the scene. Years later as a teen I worked in the restaurant business and knew only Chablis and Burgundy - as White and Red wine. Granted I worked in the back of the house. It was not till many years later in my professional career did things change. In the late 90s I'd sponsor an annual wine party at the house and asked guests to bring wines from different parts of the world. The parties featured wines from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Europe and the States. it was only a hint of what the regions could develop. In 2010 I took on a business development role and found myself needing to know more. My education was more on the job training and through personal exploration. I thank Laura and Terry, both accomplished wine aficionados, for opening my eyes wider and it was because of them I started my real wine journey. The night Terry gave me the wine list and said, "You pick the wine tonight," I know I was making marked improvements. Since that time much of my travels have had vineyard destinations and I see that to continue. I hold level 1, 2, and 3 WSET certified certifications.
